University training for Spatial Planning The Spatial Planning component in the civil engineering course at the University of Karlsruhe Authors Bernd Scholl Institut für Städtebau und Landesplanung, Universität Fridericiana zu Karlsruhe (TH), Kaiserstraße 12, 76123, Karlsruhe DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/BF03184503 Abstract At the University of Karlsruhe there is a long tradition of providing courses in Spatial Planning and, together with Infrastructure Planning, it now constitutes a distinct option for specialisation in the Faculty of Civil Engineering. As far as tuition is concerned, methodbased subject-areas occupy a special position alongside the core subjects required for Urban Development and Regional Planning. The course aims to enable students to work independently towards developing strategies for solving complex tasks in the field of Spatial Planning, to identify the suitability of instruments and procedures and to apply the knowledge they have acquired within a problem-orientated approach. In order to achieve this, the course attaches great importance to the integrated study project. This module, which is offered in every year of the course, focusing each time on a different issue of current relevance in spatial development, is conceived as a joint undertaking involving all of the chairs associated with the option.
